Dive-site story
Resting upside down in the sheltered waters of Alimia Bay off Irakleia Island, this German Arado Ar 196 floatplane was shot down during World War II. The fuselage and wings remain remarkably intact on a sandy seabed, encrusted with marine growth and surrounded by scattered debris. Thanks to its shallow positioning, natural light illuminates the entire structure throughout the day.
Well-preserved inverted fuselage, wings, and engine assembly of a World War II German floatplane
Excellent natural lighting and calm bay conditions suitable for wide-angle underwater photography
Frequent octopus and moray eel sightings around the engine block and under wing sections
