Dive-site story
The former Leander-class frigate HMNZS Canterbury was scuttled in Deep Water Cove in late 2007 to serve as a purpose-built artificial reef and recreational dive site. Sitting upright on the sandy seabed, the intact vessel offers extensive external exploration along its decks, bridge, and gun turret, alongside prepared interior penetration routes for properly trained divers. Sheltered within the cove, the wreck is heavily encrusted with invertebrates and serves as a nursery for Northland coastal fish.
Intact superstructure featuring radar arrays, gun mountings, and the bridge
Spacious helicopter hangar and pre-cut access points designed for safe penetration
Dense colonies of jewel anemones and encrusting sponges covering the hull
