Dive-site story
The SS Umbria was an Italian cargo vessel scuttled by her captain in June 1940 to avoid capture by British forces just as Italy entered World War II. Resting on her port side along the sheltered side of Wingate Reef near Port Sudan, the massive ship remains remarkably intact with almost all of its wartime cargo still inside.
Extensive cargo holds containing crated aerial bombs, artillery shells, and ammunition boxes
Three intact Fiat 1100 passenger cars resting in the cargo bay
Stunning massive bronze right-hand propeller exposed toward the surface
Superstructure covered in colorful soft corals, hydroids, and sponge formations
Accessible interior swim-throughs including the galley, workshops, and companionways
