Dive-site story
The Mercedes I gained international fame in late 1984 when a severe storm swept the freighter onto the beach against a private Palm Beach seawall. After a complex salvage operation, the vessel was scuttled as an artificial reef off Fort Lauderdale. Strong storms including Hurricane Andrew split the hull into separated sections over time, creating an open, broken-iron habitat resting on an offshore sand flat along the outer reef line.
Extensive structural wreckage with an intact bow section and collapsed engine room areas
Frequent congregating area for large goliath groupers around the stern remnants
Often combined with nearby reef drifts along the outer Fort Lauderdale ledge
