Dive-site story
Resting upright in the lower Potomac River silt near Piney Point, U-1105 is a Type VIIC/41 German submarine designated as Maryland's initial Historic Shipwreck Dive Preserve. Nicknamed the Black Panther for its experimental Alberich synthetic rubber acoustic coating, the vessel retains its conning tower and deck guns. Estuarine tidal currents and reduced visibility demand disciplined buoyancy and close navigation.
