Dive-site story
Sunk intentionally as an artificial reef off Pensacola, the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Oriskany sits upright on the sandy Gulf floor. Divers drop along mooring lines directly onto the towering superstructure, commonly called the island, before choosing between exterior tours of the navigation bridge or deep descents to the vast flight deck. Open ocean currents wash over the sheer steel walls, attracting pelagic predators and resident bottom dwellers.
Extensive navigation tower and primary flight control platform
Massive open expanse of the upper flight deck
Encountering large schools of pelagic gamefish circling the radar mast
