Dive-site story
Positioned right on the edge of the Belize Barrier Reef within a protected marine reserve, South Water Caye offers quick access to dramatic outer reef drop-offs and spur-and-groove coral formations. Divers step off the east beach or take short boat skiffs directly to sloping walls covered in deepwater gorgonians, barrel sponges, and wire corals. Because fishing is heavily regulated in the surrounding reserve, fish density remains exceptionally high across both the shallow patch reefs and the plunging blue drop-offs.
Steep wall drop-offs into oceanic depths right outside the reef crest
Expansive spur-and-groove formations decorated with giant barrel sponges and sea fans
Frequent encounters with spotted eagle rays cruising the wall edges
Shallow coral gardens reachable directly from the island shore

Seasonality
The dry season brings calmer winds, flattened seas on the eastern barrier wall, and the best underwater visibility.
