Dive-site story
Situated off the southernmost tip of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, Matapalo Rock is an isolated volcanic formation battered by open Pacific swells. Submerged boulders and rocky ridges slope down into sandy troughs where pelagic species intersect with reef dwellers. Water movement around the rock can be brisk as tides pull water past the mouth of the Golfo Dulce.
Schooling bigeye jacks and barracuda swirling around the main pinnacle
Resting whitetip reef sharks tucked beneath overhangs and rock crevices
Spotted eagle rays cruising the current lines off the rock face
