Dive-site story
Sundhäuser See is a flooded gravel pit near Nordhausen that has evolved into one of central Germany's premier inland diving destinations. The lake is widely celebrated for its submerged historical attraction, the underwater city of Nordhusia, featuring reconstructed timber-frame houses, a church tower, and a town wall. Extensive aquatic vegetation lines the shallower banks, giving way to underwater sculpture parks, sunken boat wrecks, and training platforms distributed across distinct dive zones.
Underwater village of Nordhusia complete with a church tower, half-timbered houses, and a cemetery
Multiple sunken wooden and metal wrecks scuttled intentionally as artificial habitats
Dense charophyte meadows harboring predatory fish like northern pike and European perch
Submerged art exhibits, statues, and purpose-built diver training platforms
