Dive-site story
Sunk intentionally as an artificial reef off the Montgrí coast in the early nineties, the Reggio Messina is an Italian passenger and train ferry that fractured into three main sections during heavy winter storms. The wreckage rests upright on a flat sand seafloor, featuring structural remains like bow winches, engine corridors, and fractured deck plates colonized by encrusting sponges and bryozoans. Certified divers navigate between the fragmented midsection and stern machinery where schools of fish gather above the twisted steel hull plates.
