Dive-site story
The Varese was an Italian steam cargo vessel that sank in the northern Adriatic after striking a naval mine during a storm in the First World War. The wreck rests upright on a silty seabed with its steam engine, boilers, and cargo holds largely accessible to experienced divers. Because the vessel was broken open by the mine explosion near the bow, the inner framing and machinery are exposed, providing distinct swim-through corridors illuminated by ambient surface light.
