Dive-site story
A rocky island in the Dampier Strait, Mike's Point carries an unusual wartime history. American bombers repeatedly targeted the rock during World War II, mistaking its silhouette and wake for an enemy warship. Detonations fractured the reef into a labyrinth of shattered boulders, crevices, overhangs, and swim-throughs overgrown with hard corals and gorgonians. Strong mid-strait currents draw schools of predatory fish and pelagics.
