Dive-site story
Protected under strict national park regulations following decades as an isolated prison outpost, Pianosa features some of the highest fish biomass in the northern Mediterranean. Diving is conducted on designated mooring buoys where limestone terraces, deep gullies, and extensive seagrass meadows slope down to sandy plains. Regulated diver quotas preserve exceptional fish density and unusually bold predatory behavior.
Large, resident dusky groupers that show no fear of approaching divers
Dense schools of Mediterranean barracuda circling over limestone ridges
Expansive Posidonia oceanica meadows harboring rich juvenile fish communities
Frequent flybys from hunting amberjacks and dentex in the open water
