Dive-site story
Situated within the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara and Punta Coda Cavallo off northeastern Sardinia, Secca dell'Elefante is named for a prominent granite formation whose sculpted contour evokes an elephant's head. The granite mass rises from a mixed sand and posidonia seabed, offering divers deeply cut swim-throughs, shaded overhangs, and vertical fissures covered in sponges and bryozoans. Open-water pelagics patrol the surrounding blue while territorial reef species shelter among the granite cracks.
Signature granite rock monolith resembling the head and trunk of an elephant
Frequent encounters with resident dusky groupers lounging in sheltered clefts
Dense schools of Mediterranean barracuda circling the pinnacle in open water
Well-preserved sea fans and encrusting sponges lining the deeper shaded overhangs
