Dive-site story
Located off the southern coast of Mabul Island in Sabah, this site transitions from shallow coral bommies into an expansive sandy plateau and gentle slope. It takes its name from the dense colonies of garden eels swaying above the sediment in the open sand flats, retreating into their burrows whenever divers approach too quickly. The surrounding rubble patches and coral heads serve as a classic muck and macro diving environment, harboring cryptic critters alongside passing green turtles.
Extensive colonies of spotted garden eels protruding from the sandy seafloor
Macro hunting along coral heads for ghost pipefish, frogfish, and nudibranchs
Blue ribbon eels peering out from burrows in the sandy rubble zones
Frequent encounters with resting green and hawksbill sea turtles
