Dive-site story
Junkyard Reef is a dedicated artificial reef and coral restoration project located just offshore from Mae Haad on Koh Tao. Built initially in the late 2000s to relieve diver pressure on natural coral ecosystems, the site contains an eclectic collection of structures including repurposed steel pipes, car parts, concrete domes, and coral nursery tables. Over time, these artificial foundations have matured into an active nursery and shelter for resident reef creatures.
Extensive coral restoration nursery structures and art installations
Calm, shallow setting ideal for buoyancy practice and relaxed macro observation
Resident batfish schools clustering around the larger metal framework
